Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 10:39:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding:Hearings Continue,Etc Staten Island's hearing was last night,I saw a little television news coverage...memorial-oriented,but it ranged from an overcome megamemorialist woman sobbing about how could one consider building on sacred ground and the whole 16 acres should be a memorial,to a male survivor recommending something understated, with names and an eternal flame, and "moving on". Any firsthand reports? Brooklyn's Phase I hearing is 6 PM tonight...Jen Thorpe is going, will anyone else from the list be there? (Site address and so forth are at http://www.put.com/wtc/ of course). The Gotham Gazette Java-chat with memorial coordinator Anita Contini is at NOON TODAY (less than an hour and a half)...try visiting http://www.gothamgazette.com/rebuilding_nyc/chat/index.shtml or emailing rebuilding@gothamgazette.com with questions beforehand. Issues that need addressing: Urban context of memorial is determined by height of office buildings; THIS shows whether the attack being memorialized was surrendered to or overcome, and whether the victims are in fact honored or disgraced. Leaving footprints empty severely affects possibilities for whole site design, grants terrorists an inspiring, inviting "trophy",and symbolically surrenders to them. Memorials' life expectancy as tourist attractions should not be overestimated...Empire State Building observation deck packs them in after 70 years, contrast with Grant's Tomb in 1950s and Tompkins Square Park in 1970s! Think of more... I will be at Federal Hall Saturday with some of the petition/literature volunteers!...anyone want to join? EVERYONE EVERYWHERE SEND IN PHASE I SITE PLAN COMMENTS TO THE ADDRESSES LISTED ON THE WEBSITE!!!! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
