Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 16:25:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: Registration for July 20th Event...BE CERTAIN! At the May 23rd public hearing Ron DeVito and I were told (at the same time by the same person) that filling out and handing in the blue form given to anyone in attendance was enough to register someone for the "Listening to the City II" large-scale event at the Javits on July 20th. Turns out,THIS IS NOT SO. Yesterday I had a message on my answering machine from a Michael Oliva *inviting* me to register for the event, apparently having picked up my name from my having been at the hearing.I wasn't sure whether I had put my phone number on the comment card,as well as the blue form,or what...so I called the registration number(the number Oliva gave me did not work). The person who answered the registration number had no way of telling whether or not I was already registered...he gave me another number that had an answering machine,so I tried emailing...and one of the addresses given,info@listeningtothecity.org,does not work. The listening@civic-alliance.org address does work. The answer this morning came from Tara Colton of NYU, and it was that I was NOT registered...I would have to do so by phone or on the web. IF YOU HANDED IN THE BLUE FORM AT THE HEARING YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED...CALL 800-862-3154 TO REGISTER...GET EVERY PRO-REBUILDER WHO CAN BE THERE JULY 20TH YOU CAN TO REGISTER ALSO!!! I called the phone number today and got registered, according to the person I spoke to...I have not (yet at least) gotten the "confirmation email" at least one of you HAS gotten. I was asked a number of questions, determining whether or not I lost a job as a result of the attacks, was myself a survivor or lost a relative, was a rescue worker,etc...I assume that they are looking to make sure these groups are represented. Some of you DO qualify and I hope this will help you attend! If they bump some of us...time for the leaflet/rally outside plan. (Don't forget the idea for a networking dinner afterwards). The http://pps.org/downtownnyc/ boards are still open for comment last I saw, some pro-Towers people have posted more than once but it's good to see more pro-Towers voices. The wnbc.com poll has closed, but we did get the Towers option ahead of the Memorial option at the end...now,how many of the "mixed use" people would like the Towers as the "commercial space"?...not that the Whitehead clique would interpret it that way. A list member today referred me to Erik Sieb's site, http://www.newwtcproject.com/ . He has a design, which like Derek Turner's at wtc2002.com is not the Twins, just something dramatic and tall... but it is an incarnation,I think,of the "negative space" suggested by a German architect at the May hearing. Three towers frame the footprints of the old two, and are connected on top by a structure that is over the roofs of where the old Towers were, and below by skybridges that go around where the old Towers were. The roofline is 1506 feet and the antenna reaches 1856 feet...the three tower shafts are 108 stories and the upper deck, with its rooftop garden, makes the total 122.More details at the site, which is still under construction. News this morning mentioned that the Port Authority's archives, including the construction blueprints for the WTC,were destroyed with the WTC...but I am sure the Yamasaki and Robertson firms kept copies of the blueprints if not in the same detail. I am interested in hearing from you on how you feel about sending things to the whole list...whether I should be a central clearinghouse for all messages (digest philosophy) or you don't mind hearing from other listmembers directly. I have stuck with the central-clearinghouse concept because I know some of you are a little troubled(and a few have quit) because I display everybody's address...intended,in the early going,to show us all how far from alone we are in wanting to see full-scale rebuilding of the WTC.(The media like to show us as a small out-of-touch minority). If only I am using the addresses, and only for WTC-related stuff,it's not the same as free-for-all spammail.Still,it's been suggested that I put the list in the blind-cc field, or move to a mailing list program (I do have "mailman" installed on my server,I have yet to configure it...it can create a web archive if we so desire).I will NOT move to a third-party listhost like Yahoogroups. Let's hope to meet on the 111th floor on 9-11-11... in the meantime,we'll look for the revised PPB document from Whitehead's people, due tomorrow... -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
